Walking With A Purpose
Walking is one of my favorite things to do.
If I’m bored, or uncertain of what to do, I take a walk. If I need to unwind and want to relax, I take a walk. If I’m feeling uncertain and in need of guidance, I take a walk.
In fact, come to think of it, whenever I feel the need for just about anything — with obvious exceptions, of course — I take a walk.
Walking is, for myself, absolutely essential. By taking the time to go on a nice walk, I find that I’m always able to circumvent whatever challenges I appear to be facing — whether they be challenges such as feeling stressed and anxious, or less abstract challenges such as being unsure of what direction to take my career in.
Walk With A Purpose
Through the act of walking, we are able to engage, with ease, in a number of important tasks and processes. Tasks and processes that, I believe, are fundamental towards the creation and experience of a life that is meaningful, fulfilling, and joyous.
Walking is, in itself, an act of extraordinary value and pleasure. By walking, we move our body, allowing ourselves to stretch and flex and move in the way that we were meant to move. But, we are also able to engage with the world that we are a part of, seeing and experiencing the sights, sounds, and smells that have, perhaps, been ignored.
It is inevitable that, as we do so, we encounter other people, allowing ourselves to share brief moments of acknowledgement, while also allowing for the potential birth of new connections and relationships.
Within each and every walk we take, there is the potential for a transformative purpose to direct this walk, and the results that come from taking that walk.
Every walk contains the space for this transformative purpose, but in order for the resulting transformations to take place, there must, of course, be a purpose for your walk.
There is nothing wrong with walking for the sake of walking — I do that more often than not — but I have found that when I give a walk a particular purpose, or simply set an intention for the walk, that I fulfill that purpose and bring something new into existence.
Of course, there are so many different kinds of purposes and intentions that a walk can be given. It can be difficult to find the right purpose.
On your walk, your purpose could, quite simply, be to meet someone new. It could be to receive guidance regarding a problem that you are struggling with. Perhaps, you desire a new career, then the purpose of the walk could be to nurture a powerful Inner Conversation related to you having that career, while also receiving any guidance that is necessary.
Regardless of what the purpose of your walk is, all you must do is know that purpose, and then commit to experiencing and fulfilling that person, while walking. Doing so is easier than it may seem, since there is a simple process that, in my own experience, is exceptionally powerful.
Giving Your Walk A Purpose
To walk with a purpose, you must know what purpose is, and what it means to you. That is why, before walking, there’s a need for your purpose or intention to be clear and concise. It doesn’t need to be too specific, but there needs to be a sense of clarity regarding what it is that you are doing and what that is leading to.
If you intend to receive guidance on an important question of yours, then make sure you know what that question is, and why receiving guidance is so important.
If, to name another example, the purpose of your walk is to nurture an Inner Conversation regarding your new career, make sure you know that. But, in the case of an Inner Conversation, make sure that you direct your thoughts towards that Inner Conversation.
Right after you have become aware of that purpose, it’s time for walking. But, when you begin your walk, allow your purpose to flow through your mind; repeat it and affirm it, and allow your mind to ponder over the fact that, by taking this walk, you are transforming and creating.
You are powerful, and through the act of walking, you are engaging with your creative essence and embracing your, for lack of a better phrase “True Self”.
When the walk moves past that initial minute-or-two, remind yourself of your purpose, direct your mind towards it, and remember what you are doing — creating and transforming. But, take the time to recognize your surroundings, to smile at the people passing you by, and to experience the beauty and abundance that surrounds you.
Move with those two states; recognition of that which surrounds you, and your surrender to the purpose that you have given this walk.
In doing this, I can promise you that your experiences will be, if nothing else, worthy of writing down in a journal. I cannot, unfortunately, promise that you’ll fulfill the exact purpose and intention that you’ve set out, but I can promise that you will have moved forward in various aspects of your life, and that you will feel, and be, more joyous than you were before beginning your walk.
