The Significance Of Novelty

The definition of “novelty” is as follows: a quality of being new, original, or unusual.

You can think of “novelty,” in the context we are about to explore, as being the sum of all that is new.

Or, for that matter, all that is original.

Just as an example, many years ago, the computer did not exist.

But, now it does.

That is novelty.

And, on top of that, the computer has led to many, many new things.

All of these are novelty.

Our very Universe is an engine for the production of infinite novelty.

The amount of novelty in our Universe is growing at an exponential rate.

Or, at least, that’s one set of ideas.

The vision of infinity found below is meant to explore these ideas.

Growing Infinite Novelty

Just imagine that there is a specific amount of novelty that exists right now.

The specific amount might be “100 novelty entities.”

No, that doesn’t make much sense. But, it works.

Right now there are 100 novelty entities within our Universe.

These novelty entities comprise all of the books, inventions, ideas, stories, theories, research, subjects, languages, notions, tools, movies, music, — and so on and so forth — within our Universe.

Just imagine this.

And, then, imagine that, every single decade, this quantity grows exponentially.

If there are 100 novelty entities right now then, in a decade, there will be 200 novelty entities.

A decade after this next one, there will be 400 novelty entities.

Right after that decade, there will be 800 novelty entities.

And, then, 1,600 novelty entitles.

The decade after that will lead to 3,200 novelty entities.

Right after that decade, there will be 6,400 novelty entities.

And so on and so forth, endlessly and infinitely; ad infinitum.

Just imagine that.

The endless production of novelty.

Right within this novelty, a vast collection of new ideas, inventions, books, stories, concepts; ad infinitum.

3 Special Ideas

Just before we conclude this essay, there are three special ideas to share.

Our first special idea is that the process clarified within this vision is that of exponential growth.

But, you can imagine a process where, every decade, novelty is quadrupled.

If you have 100 novelty entities then, in the next decade, you will have 400 novelty entities.

And, then, in the next decade, 1,600 novelty entities.

And so on and so forth, endlessly and infinitely; ad infinitum.

This is just one possibility. Out of an infinite number of others.

Our second special idea is that you can imagine this process of growth occurring every month.

You have 100 novelty entities in one month. And, then, in the next month, 200 novelty entities.

And so on and so forth, endlessly and infinitely; ad infinitum.

Our third special idea is that you can imagine our Universe as an infinite novelty generator.

The purpose of our Universe is to generate infinite novelty.

We are the conduit through which this novelty is born.

It’s hard to say what this means. Or, if it is particularly compelling.

But, either way, it’s a nice idea.
