Our intention, with this essay, is clarifying.

Clarifying what?

The definition of “qualitative infinities.”

Or, at least, my interpretation of them.

A Qualitative Infinity

Right before we can define a “qualitative infinity,” we must go over what a “quantitative infinity” is.

A quantitative infinity is an infinity that is composed of an infinite quantity.

Just as an example, if you have an infinite number of books, then you have a quantitative infinity.

On the other hand, though, a qualitative infinity is an infinity that could be infinite, but is not.

A good example of a qualitative infinity is knowledge.

Right now, there is a finite amount of knowledge.

But, knowledge can, ostensibly, grow infinitely, and endlessly, without any real limits.

The knowledge available to us may never be infinite.

But, the amount of knowledge available to us will grow, infinitely and endlessly, without any clear limits.

It isn’t infinite. But, it can grow infinitely, since there aren’t any limits to this growth.

The Importance Of Qualitative Infinities

Just to get this out of the way, qualitative infinities are not important.

Or, more specifically they are probably not important to you.

Even so, though, they are very, very fun.

To me.

A qualitative infinity is an entity that can grow, and evolve, without any clear limits.

Some qualitative infinities can be harmful — “infinite economic growth,” for example — but others can be inspiring.

The infinite ideas that can be made is an inspiring qualitative infinity.

Or, alternatively, the infinite essays that we can write, coupled with the endless possibilities of language, is exciting.

And so on and so forth, endlessly and infinitely; ad infinitum.

My Favorite Qualitative Infinities

Right before we wrap this up, here are seven of my favorite qualitative infinites:

  • The infinite words, terms, phrases — ad infinitum — that we can make using the English language.
  • The infinite ideas and concepts — ad infinitum — that we can find and make.
  • The infinite knowledge that we are always producing, growing, and engaging with.
  • The infinite books that we are writing and reading and engaging with.
  • The infinite experiences that we can engage with and are making, among many other things.

And so on and so forth, endlessly and infinitely; ad infinitum.
