I Remember Who I Once Was
You can change.
And, in changing, you can become who you wish to be.
Don’t get me wrong, this doesn’t mean you need to change or that you aren’t “good.”
Rather, what it means is that you can develop the skills, habits, and traits that will enable you to live and thrive in a wealth of new, exciting ways.
A wealth of new, exciting ways that resonate with your aims and goals.
My hope is that the “I Remember Who I Once Was” gratitude game will assist you in doing so.
I Remember Who I Once Was
You can change.
But, that’s not all; you are always changing.
Every moment of your life is rich with change.
You are growing new neural pathways every moment. You are noticing new things every moment. You are thinking new thoughts every moment.
And so on and so forth.
None of this even begins to cover the wealth of changes we experience on an emotional, mental, and physical level; all of which are happening right now, within this very moment.
The process of change is, perhaps, inevitable.
A constant force that exists within our lives.
A constant force that animates our universe.
You are a creative being.
And, as a creative being, you can direct the force of change.
You can direct the force of change to allow you, and that which you are, to change.
To change in a way that aligns with your deepest aims and goals.
Just as an example, you can grant yourself the gift of new skills or habits that allow you to be a creative writer or a musician or, perhaps, someone who is more deeply connected to the world.
And so on and so forth, for the possibilities are infinite.
To accomplish this task, you can play a game.
A gratitude game that, as its title suggests, is rooted in the “I Remember When” methodology we explored earlier.
To play this game, you must “Remember When” you were as you are now, while imagining that you are a future version of yourself who is exactly the one you wish to be.
Right before we dive into the specifics of this game, though, allow me to share a story from my own life.
A Story From My Own Life
Sometime in the Winter of 2021, I chose to imagine a new me.
Or, at least, I chose to imagine myself with some new characters.
Right within those moments, the notion of being an “explorer” was a source of enchantment.
Someone who is constantly pursuing new frontiers, exploring new ideas, trying new things; a constant hunger for novelty and experience; the experience of being alive and really being in the world.
And, within this enchantment, there was an experiment.
A rather simple experiment that consisted of remembering myself, as I was then, while appreciating the fact that I am now — or, was then — different.
Different in ways that aligned with the notion of being an explorer.
I chose to appreciate the adventures I was going on and the new ideas I was exploring; the unique ways in which I was diving into my creativity; the sheer abundance of wonderful things I was making.
And so on and so forth.
I appreciated each one of these things and I appreciated the ways in which I had grown and the gifts that this growth had brought into my life and, in turn, was continuing to bring into my life.
And, in doing so, the following year was a true gift.
The year of 2022 brought with it a vast assortment of wonderful opportunities.
Opportunities for adventure, creativity, work, wealth, friendship; and so on and so forth.
I accepted them all — or, at least, most of them — as a true explorer would.
And, in accepting these opportunities, I not only became an explorer, I became so very blessed.
To this day, I retain those exploratory qualities and continue to exist as an explorer.
How Do You Play The “I Remember Who I Once Was” Game?
Right before you begin the “I Remember Who I Once Was” game, consider who you are, right now.
Just go over your habits, assumptions, beliefs, patterns; and so on and so forth.
Right after you do so, consider what it is that you wish to change.
Or, perhaps, who you wish to become.
You can consider the aims and goals you wish to achieve.
And, then, you can consider who you would need to be, in order to achieve them.
Outside of that, though, you can also consider what you would like your daily life to look like.
And, within that same line of thought, consider who you would need to be, to make that happen.
Go over the traits, skills, habits, assumptions, beliefs — and so on and so forth — that you need.
Right after you do so, allow yourself to relax.
Within the state of relaxation you have just entered, allow yourself to “Remember When” you were as you are now.
And, then, appreciate the fact that you are no longer quite like that.
Rather, you are someone different.
You are who you wish to be.
And, you remember when you weren’t who you wish to be.
But, now, you are who you wish to be.
Within this state, of being who you wish to be, you appreciate.
You appreciate who you’ve become but, also, who you were, and the beauty of those moments.
Allow yourself to do this for ten traits, qualities, skills, habits — and so on and so forth — until you feel that you are done.
And, know that, in doing this, you are becoming who you wish to be.
You are becoming who you wish to be and, in many ways, you have become who you wish to be.
Remember that and allow this fact to shape you and the world you live within.
