Creating Your Assumptions By Asking Questions

Last month, in December of 2020, I published an essay titled “4 More Unconventional Ways To Expand Your Mind”. In that essay, we looked at four, very unconventional, ways that you can expand your mind and, as a result, your life and your sense of self.

My favorite method, within the essay, is a method that involves questioning your assumptions and building new ones. By making use of this method, you are able to tap into new assumptions, beliefs, and facets of your self-concept that, while not currently accepted as being true of you or your life, already exist in one form or another.

The essay you are about to read expands on that method. You can use the method outlined in this essay to not only expand your mind, but to develop new assumptions for yourself and to create extraordinary transformations within your life.

My hope, for you, is that you enjoy using this method and that you have a tremendous amount of fun playing with it and seeing where your efforts take you!

Creation Is Finished

My favorite New Thought writer is Neville Goddard. One of Neville Goddard’s most useful, and mind-expanding, ideas is that creation is finished. That is to say, everything you could ever want or need or desire already exists and is, in this moment, accessible to you.

Just think about that for a moment. Meditate on that for a minute or two.

Everything you could ever want or need or desire — no matter what it is — already exists and can be obtained and experienced and acquired and accessed.

The fascinating thing about this concept, though, is that it refers to more than just material aims and ambitions; every potential quality, trait, characteristic, and ability that you could possibly possess already exists as something you can possess.

No matter who it is that you wish to become — a charismatic speaker, a phenomenal writer, or a spiritual leader; among an infinite number of other possibilities — you can become that person because the role that you wish to assume, and all of the qualities that comprise that role, already exist. You need only to claim them as present facts and, in doing so, you will express that which already exists but has been invisible to you.

Remembering, and understanding, that creation was finished long ago is essential to engaging with the practice described below.

You Are Who You Think You Are

Much of our experience of the world is rooted not in the objective reality of our senses but, in fact, the subjective reality that our consciousness creates, modifies, and distorts.

To paraphrase Anais Nin, we do not see the world as it truly is, but as we are.

The same is true of ourselves. To a great extent, we are bound to our assumptions of the world and, more importantly, the assumptions we hold about ourselves.

More often than not, our assumptions are invisible. You might think of them as invisible ghosts that haunt the edges of periphery, defining and distorting our experience of the world in every way imaginable.

Too often, these invisible ghosts of ours remain unacknowledged. This, of course, means that the effects emanating from these invisible ghosts remain unacknowledged, as well, and that we are unable to go beyond the effects of how we assume ourselves to be.

The wonderful thing about all of this, though, is that you are not bound to your assumptions. You are not bound to the ways you see yourself, and you are not bound to the ways you see the world.

Every assumption, no matter what it is, is fluid and subject to change.

To change your assumptions — and, as a result, yourself and your experience of the world — you can engage in a variety of practices. The essence of these practices, despite their variety, is universal: surrender.

Surrender Your Assumptions; Surrender To Your Assumptions

Every assumption that we possess regarding ourselves is just that: an assumption. Assumptions are powerful, and they define many of the facets and qualities that define ourselves and the lives that we lead.

But, despite their power, they remain assumptions and, as such, are subject to change.

All that is necessary, for you to change your assumptions, is to surrender them. Surrender them and, as you do so, surrender to new assumptions that evoke joy, bliss, possibility, excitement, creativity, and meaning.

Of course, for you to surrender your old assumptions, and surrender to new assumptions, there are two things you need to know: one, how to surrender to these new assumptions, and two, the assumptions you would like to surrender to.

Asking Questions & Creating Assumptions

To engage with the method that is about to be described, you must know the assumptions that you wish to surrender and, in turn, the assumptions you wish to surrender to.

Take some time to think about who you are and who you wish to become. You can be anybody — or, rather, you can be any version of yourself you wish to be — and you can do anything that you wish to do. So, be creative and playful, because this is your life and you are here to live the greatest life that you can live.

Let’s say that you possess a number of assumptions regarding your charisma and magnetism. You do not feel charismatic, nor do you feel particularly magnetic. Rather, you feel shy, a little awkward, and somewhat stilted.

None of those assumptions, or the feelings and circumstances they engender, are desirable to you. As a matter of fact, they are preventing you from enjoying certain experiences that you desire to engage with, while also making it more difficult for you to feel satisfied and fulfilled.

Let’s say that, based on what you don’t want, you wish to become magnetic and charismatic.

To become magnetic and charismatic, you must remember that these qualities already exist within you. You may not sense them, and you may not experience them, but they exist and you can make the choice to claim them as traits and qualities that you possess.

For you to make that choice, the only thing you need to do is ask yourself a series of questions.

“Why am I so magnetic? How am I so charismatic? What makes me so charismatic?”

You can ask a limitless variety of questions that exist along that same train of thought. In fact, I encourage you to do so because the more questions, the more you will build-up and accept the assumption that you are choosing for yourself.

Right after you ask those questions, though, a series of responses will come forth. Initially, these responses may be chaotic and scattered. Keep asking questions, though, and allow your mind to concentrate solely on the responses that affirm your assumption and the various details within the assumption.

To go back to the main example, you may receive responses regarding your phenomenal abilities as a listener, the fact that you choose to be charismatic and are magnetic as a result of your choice, how much you enjoy being around people; along with many other responses of that sort.

Every assumption you could possibly possess — and, remember, there is an infinite variety of assumptions to choose from — already exists and, with it, everything that’s necessary for that assumption to become a present fact that defines yourself

All you need to do, to perform this method, is to know who you wish to be and to ask questions that presuppose you are that person.

Keep asking questions of that sort, as often as you can, and allow yourself to accept those responses, to surrender to them as the facts that you are allowing them to become.

You may feel that, initially, you are simply “making it up” and “daydreaming”. But, lest you forget, all great things, no matter what they may be, begin in imagination.

Even if you are having difficulties accepting those responses, and the qualities and traits contained within them, as facts, that’s okay.

Just keep doing it, and set aside time to deliberately give yourself new assumptions and to transform yourself in a way that aligns with your dreams and ambitions.

My promise to you is that if you know who you wish to be, ask questions that affirm you are who you wish to be, and do so for a little bit everyday, with genuine intent, you will become far greater than you ever knew you could be.

The Method

Step 01: Know Who You Wish To Be

Step 02: Define The Qualities You Wish To Assume

Step 03: Ask Questions That Affirm You Possess Those Qualities

Step 04: Do So As Often As Possible

Step 05: Surrender To Your New Assumptions & Live Your Life

Conclusion

No matter who you wish to become, the only thing you really need to do is ask questions. Just ask questions and, by asking questions, you will allow yourself to experience what has always been there.
