Accessing Your Infinite Creativity

Each and every one on this planet — and off of it, it must be said — is creative. Creativity is who we are, and to live a truly fulfilling and joyous life, I believe that expressing and harnessing this creativity is absolutely essential.

Of course, there are an infinite number of ways as to how you can express and harness your creativity. Come to think of it, we’re all expressing and harnessing our creativity every single day, often in ways that we don’t even acknowledge and recognize. Even something as simple as doing our grocery shopping is, more often than not, a creative venture. After all, we need to think about what we want to buy, what we would like to cook, how we’re going to navigate the market; among various other questions that, naturally, inspire the endless creative abilities within us.

Even though there are an infinite number of ways to express and harness our creativity, in this essay, I am choosing to focus on just one way of expressing creativity. This method, as you might call it, is extremely simple and easy. You can perform it just about anywhere. But, despite its simplicity, it is exceptionally powerful and can be used for just about anything. I, personally, use it to create images and sensations for various fantastical worlds and spaces, because I love writing about those worlds and spaces.

What Is The Method?

Within each and every one of us, there is an endless well of creative energy. Each one of us has access to this endless well of creative energy at any time. But, many of us often have issues and difficulties accessing and making use of this creative energy due to our own beliefs and assumptions regarding who we are and what we should and should not be doing.

Forcing ourselves to “be creative” can work, but it often leads to results that are scattered and less-than-ideal. But, if we move away from the idea of “force” and “being forceful”, and towards the idea of “surrender”, then the entire situation transforms.

To surrender to the endless well of creative energy within us, we must first know what it is that we are looking for. For some of us, this could be an answer to a difficult question; for others, this could be something a little more vague, such as “an adventure”. Regardless of the intention, we must know what it is and, for the best results, why we want it.

Since we know what it is that we are choosing to experience, we can then take the next step. And, this next step is that of relaxing our mind and body, so that the creative energies within us can begin moving in the right direction. Doing this is quite simple, since eight breaths, give or take, usually quiets the mind and settles the body.

Once the body and mind are settled, you will be amazed as to what transpires. Sensations of all sorts will begin flowing through you, images of beings, spaces, and landscapes will reveal themselves. Sounds and smells will pass through your imaginal eyes and ears. There will be an influx of sensory data, all of it meaningful and useful to some extent.

As the experience is taking place, there are two choices that you can make. One of which is to simply allow the experience to pass through, with the assumption that you will record what you experienced after you’re finished. But, the other choice consists of using the recorder on your smartphone — or any other device, for that matter — to record what you are experiencing. Both are very useful, but it’s worth noting that, by recording your experiences, you subtly alter the experience and this will lead to unique sensations that may not have appeared otherwise.

Why Is It Useful?

You can use this method for anything. And, by anything, I mean “anything”. It doesn’t matter what it is that you are choosing to create and experience — a new type of computer, ideas for a short story, or clarity regarding your life’s purpose; to name just three examples — because this method allows you to access the creative energies that are necessary for that to happen.

Beyond that, though, this is an excellent method to use for feeling your desires as a reality. All you must do, then, is set an intention to feel a particular desire as a reality, and by choosing that and then relaxing, you allow those natural feelings, emotions, and sensations to come forth.

Regardless of what you are doing or what you would like to do, this method can help you. In my own life this method has given me endless ideas for essays to write, allowed me to explore unique imaginal worlds, and made it easy for me to feel specific desires as a present reality, allowing for those desires to come into being within my life in a truly effortless manner.

How Do You Apply It?

The application of this particular method is very simple. You can apply it just about anywhere — although, it’s best to do it in a relatively quiet and relaxed space — and there are no limits to what you can do with this method.

Step 01: Set An Intention

To begin using this method, you must first set an intention. This intention can be as vague or as specific as you would like it to be. Every now and then, I will simply set an intention for “adventure” or “mystery”, and I see and experience some wonderful things. But, of course, there are many other instances in which I set a more elaborate and defined intention.

Step 02: Quiet Your Mind, Settle Your Body

No matter where you are, you should be able to take a few breaths. By inhaling for four-seconds and exhaling for four-seconds you will quiet your mind greatly and settle your body. If you do this eight-times — eight breaths usually works quite well for me — you should be in the perfect state for the experience that is about to take place.

Step 03: Surrender To What Comes Forth

Remember your intention. Think of it and feel it, if you are able to do so. And then, simply close your eyes and surrender to what is already there — the endless creative energy flowing through you — and allow that to be your experience.

Every single time I’ve performed this method, I see a stream of images and I hear a menagerie of sounds. These all coalesce into something that is slightly more concrete, but it can take a minute or two before that happens.

Regardless of what you experience, know that it comes from within, and that it is valuable. The value that it presents may not be apparent upon engaging with the experience, but I promise you that it is valuable and its value will reveal itself to you if you allow it to do so.

Step 04: Record What Took Place

For myself, I generally allow the session to be no more than ten-minutes. But, you can do it for a longer or shorter period of time, depending on what you are looking for. Right after that time has passed, though, you will need to record what took place.

More often than not, I write down what I experienced. Words are usually more than sufficient for the experience. But, you can also record what you experienced using other mediums, such as drawing or painting; among many others.

For those who would like to record as the experience is taking place, I recommend using a relatively hands-off recording device, such as a recorder app on your smartphone. That way, you aren’t trying to manipulate any buttons or fiddling with any settings. As you express what is taking place, you will affect and transform the overall experience, so it’s important to keep that in mind.
